SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer—four key steps that guide this method:
- Scripture: Select a passage from the Bible and write it down. This act helps you fully engage with the text, focusing on specific verses and absorbing their message and meaning. By doing this, you can allow yourself to slow down and truly savor this spiritual nourishment.
- Observation: Reflect on the passage in your journal. What stands out to you? Write down your initial observations, considering the context, key themes, and any questions that arise.
- Application: We’re called to put the Word into action (see James 1:22). Ask yourself, “How does this passage apply to my life?” Note any practical steps you can take to live out its teachings. This step is about making the Word relevant and actionable.
- Prayer: Conclude your study with a prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to help you
understand and apply the passage. Ask Him to reveal areas in your life where you need to apply this biblical truth.
